Returns peak 2-3 months after launch. The cause is rarely bad luck — it's the factory swapping materials in mass production: copper coil to aluminum, thinner glass, cheaper cable, downgraded fan. The factory saves $1 a unit; you lose the returns, the reviews, and the brand.
Protection comes from three habits: key parts (coil, glass, cable, fan) locked by brand and model in the BOM with no substitution allowed, a sealed golden sample signed by both sides that bulk must match, and a unilateral material change treated as a breach with rework or refund.
When the container lands, the ten-minute check that pays for itself: weigh the whole shipment against the bill of lading, open one unit and match it to the sealed sample, and photograph the key parts before they leave the warehouse. Catch any substitution at the dock — not through your end customer's return.
